Why and how ?

The Hermione, the frigate famous for having taken La Fayette to America to join Washington and the rebel colonists, was wrecked and lost off the coast of France in 1793. An association decided, with the help of local public bodies, to embark on the appealing but difficult adventure of constructing a faithful replica in the same dockyard at Rochefort in which the original Hermione had been built. What a huge and mad challenge for a small team.

The construction, begun in 1997, is planned to be completed in 2013, when the ship will be launched in the Charente river. The Hermione will then sail across the Atlantic, 235 years after the voyage of her ancestor.

It is the story of this fascinating reconstruction that is told with warmth and professional competence by Jean-Marie Ballu, a leading specialist in wood for shipbuilding and in shipwright’s techniques. The author holds a senior post in the Forestry Department of the French Ministry of Agriculture.
